IN MEMORIAM: Rev. David J. Born, 68;

Spent Career in New York City Ministry

WESTFORD – Rev. David J. Born, 68, who moved to Otsego County in his retirement and  served on the Board of Directors of the Otsego Jail Ministry, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at his home in Westford.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., on May 3, 1947 to Andrew E. and Hilda M. (Spiegelberg) Born, David made his career in the ministry in New York City.  He graduated with a Masters of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 1973 and went on to pastor at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Brooklyn and Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Queens, acting as headmaster of Our Saviour Lutheran School. He went on to become Synodical Area Developer for North American Missions of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.

Upon retirement he accepted a position as consultant with the Transforming Churches Network.  In Cooperstown he served on the Board of Directors of the Jail Ministry of Otsego County (JMOC).

David was a master carpenter and builder. A lifetime learner, he was very fond of Romanesque art and architecture, international travel, and Renaissance and Baroque music.  He volunteered his time to evangelizing the streets of NYC through “Apple of His Eye Mission Society”. He wanted everyone to know Jesus as their personal Savior and have the same hope in the Resurrection that he had. His motto was, “We gotta save these guys!”.  He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

David was happily married to Anita Bell Born for 44 years and is survived by her, their daughter, Gillian Born Elliot , Gillian’s husband, John Robert Elliot, their children, Trenton John and Evelyn Mary, and also by their son, Christopher Andrew Born, and Christopher’s wife, Sarah Avrit Cohen and their two daughters, Liora Anne and Aviva Kathleen.  He is also survived by his sister, Andrea Nielsen of Boyertown, PA and her children, Karin, Kristin, Katherine, Karolin and Joseph.

Calling hours will be held 4-7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 26  at Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer Street, Cooperstown.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Christ Episcopal Church, 46 River Street.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations in David’s memory be made to either, Transforming Churches Network, 1160 Vickery Lane, Suite 1, Cordova, TN 38016 or Christ Episcopal Church, 46 River Street, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are entrusted to Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
