IN MEMORIAM: Irene M. Miller, 96;

Local Elementary School Teacher

MILFORD CENTER — Irene (McGunnigle) Miller died on July 27, 2018. She was 96. She was born and raised in Hicksville, NY on Long Island, one of 4 other sisters and 2 brothers.

After high school she came to Oneonta to attend the then NY State Teachers College (Oneonta State Normal School) which is now SUNY Oneonta. She graduated with her Teaching Degree in Elementary Education and until her retirement in 1979 she taught various K-6 grades on Long Island, Unadilla, Milford and for the final 20 years at Center Street School in Oneonta teaching 1st Grade.

While at the State Teachers College she met her future husband, Alfred T. Miller, a local boy. They were married on August 24, 1947 and proceeded to take up residence in 1950 in Milford Center where she resided until her death. If you ran into Irene or even met her for the first time her favorite thing to ask you was your name and where you were from. This was because there was a good chance she had taught you or had taught your parents in school somewhere along the line.

Irene was predeceased by her husband, Alfred and sons, Thomas and Michael. She was also predeceased by all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Meghan (Miller) Contento; and nieces, Mary Ellen, Joanne, Victoria, Patricia, Christine and their families; and nephew, Roger and his family.

A graveside memorial service will be on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons with Rev. David Mickiewicz officiating. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Susquehanna Animal Shelter, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, New York 13326 or to the Milford Fire Department and Emergency Squad, State Highway 28, Milford, New York 13807 in loving memory of Irene M.
