ONEONTA – Doris L. Layman, 86, who worked at Bresee’s Department Store for 20 years, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at The Focus Nursing Home.

She was born March 4, 1929 in Franklin, the daughter of Harry and Mrytle (Alger) Davenport.

Doris married Stephen Layman Jr. in Pennsylvania.  They have been married for 67 years.

Doris was a custodian at Bresee’s, and a member of the Ladies of the Moose Lodge 465.

She loved cooking, baking, canning, gardening and her flowers.  She was especially fond of baking goodies with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She enjoyed playing bingo, dancing, bowling and going for rides around the countryside with her husband.

Doris is survived by her husband, Stephen Layman Jr.; three children, Bruce and Gloria Layman, Gloria and Jim Maerz, all of Oneonta and Darlene and Michael Schmitt of West Oneonta; 8 grandchildren, Amy, Angela, Brian, Michelle, Melissa, Stephen, Diane and Susan; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill Davenport and four sisters, Geraldine Kelsey, Catherine Edwards, Bertha Jacques and Rosemary Beers; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a bother, Robert Davenport and a sister, Cora Kelsey.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta, with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.

Interment will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.
