Emotions Run High

At Kinderhook Rally

Cassidy A. Maze of New Lebanon, top photo, leads 1,000 people in ’60s-style protest songs at a rally this afternoon  in front of the Kinderhook office of U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-19, whose district includes Otsego County. Lower photo, Trump supporter Andrew Monell – one of only two counter-protesters evident – stirs taunts and fist-shaking when he drove his motorcycle, blaring “God Bless The U.S.A.” and other patriotic ballads, into the edge of the crowd. Organized by Indivisible CD-19, the rally’s original goal, according to organizer Pam Kline of Livingston, was to convince the newly elected Faso to hold Town Hall meetings, like the ones that elicited angry crowds across the U.S. this week. However, speakers – they included retired Bassett OB-GYN Mark Heller – spoke on a range of issues, from Trump’s seeming tilt toward Russia, to the easing of environmental regulation and Climate Change, continued funding for women’s health, and ensuring changes in the Affordable Care Act don’t deny citizens medical care. The rally began at 2, and after 90 minutes of speeches, chants and song, about 200 protesters walked two blocks to Faso’s house; the congressman didn’t appear to be home, and the crowd dispersed without incident. There were about a half-dozen Otsego County attendees; the thinking was a smaller rally in Delhi at noon (see below) drew away protesters from Oneonta and Cooperstown.   While the rally was peacful, speakers had been told an individual with a pistol was in the crowd, and police were present throughout.  (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
