IN MEMORIAM: Margaret Carrington,

85; Church Organist, Bank Manager

ONEONTA – Margaret R. Carrington, 85, former manager at several local banks and the organist at the West Davenport Baptist Church, died Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016.

She was born April 4, 1931, in Oneonta, the daughter of the late William V. and Bernice E. (Crounse) Rathbun. Peggy grew up on the Rathbun farm in Prosser Hollow. She went to a one-room school hous, then went on to graduate from Oneonta High School, Class of 1947.

Peggy married Jack W. Mellott on March 5, 1949. He died Sept. 4, 1950. On July 31, 1955, she married Sterling J. Carrington. He died May 28, 2006. She later married Keith L. Carrington on March 28, 1974. Keith died Aug. 26, 1983.

Peggy worked at Citizen’s National Bank, National Commercial Bank and Key Bank NA. She retired in 1992 as Manager of the West End Branch.

She was a member of the West Davenport Baptist Church for most of her life; she served as church organist and church treasurer. In recent years, she attended the Southside Wesleyan Church. Peggy was a member of the Oneonta Business Women’s, the Charlotte Valley Cemetery Board and played piano for numerous musical productions at Charlotte Valley Central School. But the greatest joy in Peggy’s life was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Peggy is survived by her three children, Sherry (Karl) Schoonover, David (Lori) Carrington and William (Darlene) Carrington; six grandchildren, Erik (Jennifer) Hanson, Kris Hanson, Todd Carrington, Jeanette (Pete) Tolson, Caitlin Carrington (Brandon Lesperance) and Jarrod Carrington (April Briggs); six great grandchildren, Mikeeli and Natalie Hanson, Olivia and Molly Tolson, Madison Morgan and Logan Wilson; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her granddaughter, Danielle Dyer.

Calling hours will be held 11a.m. – 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street. Funeral services will immediately follow with Charles Christman officiating. Burial will be in the Charlotte Valley Cemetery, West Davenport.
