IN MEMORIAM: Samuel H. Neal, 79;

Presbyterian Pastor, Systems Analyst

SPRINGFIELD CENTER – Samuel H. Neal III, 79, of Springfield Center, a retired Presbyterian pastor and teacher, passed away suddenly Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at Bassett Hospital.

He was born on April 6, 1937, in Philadelphia to Samuel H. Neal Jr. and Grace Hawlk Neal, and was raised there. He married Arlene Sloan Neal on June 14, 1958, and served in the Air Force 1960-1966.

He was a graduate of the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, taught high school for 13 years at Wooster High School, graduated from Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown, Pa. and received the masters of divinity from Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio.

He served as a Presbyterian pastor for several small churches for 20 years.  He was also a systems analyst and trainer at Willowglen Academy in New Jersey for 10 years.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by daughter Kimberly N. Lewis, son-in-law Robert P. Lewis, a grandson Ryan R. Lewis and granddaughter Sarah E. Lewis, all of Springfield Center.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, William.

He loved hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing with his daughter, coaching boys in track, and traveling with his wife to lighthouses, waterfalls and the Erie Canal.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley. A memorial service will be at 11 AM , Monday, Oct. 10 at the VanHornesville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the VanHornesville Cemetery.
