MARYLAND – Samuel (Sam) Joseph Glanzman, Town of Maryland, a prize-winning American comics artist best known for his Charlton Comics series Hercules, and work for DC and Marvel Comics, passed away July 12, 2017, of natural causes. He was 92.
Born in Baltimore, Md. On Dec. 5, 1924, to Gustave and Florence Glanzman, Sam was a professional illustrator and writer. Self-taught, Sam did free-lance work for such comic book companies as DC, Marvel and Charlton, Outdoor Life Magazine, and many others.
Titles he worked on throughout his more than 65-year career included G. I. Combat, Sgt. Rock, Hercules, Jonah Hex, Fightin’ Army, and Kona-Monarch of Monster Isle. His most recent work, published in 2016, “USS Stevens: The Collected Stories”, was nominated for the prestigious Eisner Award, the comics’ industry equivalent of the Oscar Awards.
