ONEONTA – Two men were arrested after a woman allegedly found them looking through her purse in her Main Street apartment, city police reported today.

Spencer Robert McCarthy, 25, Shirley, and Jeffrey Steven Votee, 27, Morris, were arrested after Oneonta Police responded to a call on Tuesday, July 4, that the victim had allegedly found the two men in her apartment, looking through her purse.

The victim was able to chase the suspects from her apartment and attempt to keep them from fleeing, but the pair broke free as the victim attempted to hold on to them.

Continuing investigation by the uniformed members of the department located one of the suspects at the Red Apple at 65 Chestnut Street, where he was taken into custody without incident.  The second suspect remained at large until earlier this morning,  when he was located at his residence by Detectives and taken into custody, also without incident.

Both were charged with burglary in the second degree, a class C felony, as well as Attempted Petit Larceny, a class B misdemeanor. McCarthy was arraigned in Oneonta City Court and remanded on a $10,000/$20,000 bail, while Votee was arraigned and bailed himself out on a $5,000 bail.

If convicted, both men face up to 25 years incarceration.
