Leads To Main Event

COOPERSTOWN – The fifth annual charity BASE race is underway at this hour, the first event in the Memorial Day Weekend that this afternoon will bring the eighth annual Hall of Fame Classic to Doubleday Field.

LaTroy Hawkins of the Minnesota Twins and Andy Sonnanstine of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were on hand to encourage the runners.

Josh Edmonds of Cooperstown and Amy Allen of Oneonta are among local contenders in the main event, due to begin in a few minutes.  The day features 5K and 10K races.

The race sets the stage for this afternoon’s Classic, again sponsored by Ford, and featuring Hall of Famers Andre Dawson, Rollie Fingers, Fergie Jenkins, Phil Niekro, Ryne Sandberg and Ozzie Smith as managers and coaches.

The seven-inning legends game begins at 1:05 p.m., and includes one player from each of the MLB’s 30 teams.
