ONEONTA – Bombers Burrito Bar has “permanently closed” less than six months after opening, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

No reason was given for the closure, and owner John Hewitt declined to comment. However, Mayor Gary Herzig said that he received an email from Hewitt, stating that his goal was to re-open in February.

“He said his cash flow was slow and that he needed to close in order to re-strategize,” he said. “His goal is to re-open in February, and my hope is that he can meet that goal.”

On Dec. 10, they hosted the Otsego County Chamber’s “Business After Hours” event, attended by Assemblyman John Salka, R-Brookfield, and his challenger, Dan Buttermann, Oneonta, as well as salsa dancing and trivia nights as recently as last week.

Hewitt, who bought the former Newberry’s building at 221 Main Street in 2016, was originally supposed to include four duplexes on the upper floors in addition to the franchise of the popular Capital District eatery. Though originally slated to open in January 2017, multiple delays kept the project in limbo until earlier this year, when construction got underway.

The phone number listed for the restaurant was not accepting messages, and an additional message sent to Hewitt was not immediately returned.
