Common Council Will Consider

Shortterm-Rentals Moratorium

ONEONTA – City Hall is joining its counterparts – the villages of Cooperstown and Milford – in revisiting its regulations governing shortterm rentals, one of the pluses and minuses of the summer tourist season.

When it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Common Council will be asked to declare a nine-month moratorium on variances or new permits on landlords renting out lodging by the week.

In the fall of 2017, the Cooperstown Village Board approved a moratorium and Milford followed suit in 2018, fearing multiplying rentals were changing the nature of residential neighborhoods.

Regulations since enacted often require landlords to live in the rental properties or other measures that ensure, if the rentals are allowed, they are under control.

Common Council will also be asked to give SEQRA approval to the city’s new Comprehensive Master Plan, attesting it will have no harmful impact on the city’s environment.
