LAURENS – Larry Robert Leahy, 80, retired teacher and coach at Morris Central School, and Laurens town justice and town board member, passed away on July 4, 2017.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1936, in Binghamton, the eldest of six children of John Robert and Mary Gwendolyn (Wheat) Leahy. Larry married Carole Rae Margeson on June 14, 1964, the same day they both graduated from SUNY Oneonta.

ONEONTA – Bernard F. “Bernie” Richardson, 81, retired Oneonta High School teacher and current owner of local businesses, died June 9, 2017, at Bassett Hospital.

He was born to Harry T. and Mina (Fairfield) Richardson on April 15, 1936, in Corning.  He was raised in Elmira Heights and graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School.

SPRINGFIELD – Dorothy Catherine Stocking Smith, 94, who worked for years at Richfield Springs’ Foreman’s Department Store, as well as for several local families, passed away June 8, 2017 , peacefully at the Fox Nursing Home .

She was born March 2, 1923, in East Springfield, the daughter of Leslie O. Stocking and Ida Mae Barrett Stocking.

ONEONTA – James Edward Connolly, 64, who obtained a liver transplant in 1990 and a kidney transplant in 2011, passed away June 6, 2017, at Bassett Hospital.

He was born Sept. 17, 1952, in Mount Kisco, the son of Edward Patrick and Rose Agnes (McMahon) Connolly.

WEST ONEONTA – Maureen P. Hulbert, 76, a benefactress to the Oneonta community along with her husband, the late Henry Hulbert, passed away at home on June 2, 2017, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

She was born Jan. 4, 1941, the daughter of Frank and Kathryn (Noonan) Keegan.

As part of the Oneonta community, she served on the boards of directors for Fox Memorial Hospital, the Riley J. and Lillian N. Warren & Beatrice W. Blanding Foundation and the Philip E. Potter Foundation.

ONEONTA – B. Katherine Angell, who worked for Bendix, Bresee’s and Leon Kalmus over her career, passed away April 14, 2017, leaving two children and two grandchildren.

She was born Jan. 30, 1924, in Laurens, the daughter of Ralph and Esther (Clark) Terrell.  She married Gordon (Jim) Angell on May 11, 1974, in Oneonta. He predeceased her Oct. 8, 1999.

Katherine is survived by a son and his wife, Joseph and Marietta Franzese of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; a daughter Patricia Franzese of Provincetown, Mass., and a granddaughter Sara Ann Franzese and grandson Joseph Anthony Franzese, both of Chagrin Falls.

Her beloved brother, Dr. Ross Terrell, predeceased her in 2010. Her former spouse and father to her children, Joseph Franzese, predeceased her in 1998.

Katherine was a 1940 graduate of Oneonta High School, and attended SUNY Oneonta. She was employed for several years as a senior draftsman at Bendix in Sidney. She also worked for a time in Bresee’s Department Store, Leon Kalmus’ surveyor office, and before her husband’s illness and death she worked as a merchandiser for New York periodicals.

Katherine had many interests: she was an accomplished seamstress who especially enjoyed quilting.  She loved classical music and English literature, in particular the Bronte sisters, having a large collection of their novels and poems. She was also a devoted animal lover, adopting many stray cats and found homes for those she could not care for herself.

There will be no public services. Inurnment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta with her parents.

WESTFORD – Helen Frances Huntington, 96, who was active in Westford’s community life, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2017.

She was born in Worcester, to Otho and Goldie (Barton) Millias. After graduating from Worcester Central School, she worked as a clerk at Scintilla in Sidney.  She married James Huntington on June 3, 1945, and together they raised four children.

An active member of her community, Helen volunteered in many organizations including PTA, Scouts, OES, DAR and St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. She was very social and enjoyed playing bridge and attending church weekly.

ONEONTA – Denise M. Darlin, 66, who was known for her beautiful plants and home, passed away May 7, 2017 with her devoted daughter and son-in-law by her side, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born September 24, 1950 in Sidney the daughter of the late Clarence and Jane (Hungerford) Darlin.

Denise worked from 1974-2001 for Custom Electronics where she was awarded many certificates of perfect attendance, Mac Laser Technologies 2002-2006 and lastly at Ericson Fired Arts Inc.

ONEONTA – Jeremy Allen, 86, a polo player, race car driver and businessman in his native Kenya before moving to the U.S. and in 1986 buying Robynwood Adult Home in Oneonta, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2017.

Born Oct. 16, 1930, in Nairobi, Kenya, to Brian and Lorna (Henley) Allen, Jeremy spent his youth in Kenya where he developed a lifelong love of nature and agriculture.

He spent his early school years in Kenya, and at age 14 continued his studies in 1944 at Wellington College in England. Although accepted to Cambridge for biochemistry, he chose to return to Kenya, having been away from home for four years.

Back in Nairobi, he assumed ownership of his father’s business, Queens Cleaners & Dyers, Ltd., where deliveries were made by horse-drawn wagon.

ONEONTA – Paul Wilson Shelton, 93, a World War II veteran who served on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier during 32 battles in the Pacific Theater, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Fox Hospital.

He was born May 18, 1923, in Warwick, Tenn., the son of the late Henry and Clarence (Cherry) Amos.  Paul was raised in Woodville, Mississippi and graduated from Woodville High School.

He enlisted in the Navy just before Pearl Harbor Day and, assigned to the USS Lexington, was also involved in the development of radar.

COOPERSTOWN – Thomas Joseph Moore, 82, a New York Telephone employee who retired to Cooperstown, died Thursday, March 2, 2017.

He was born to Brigid and Edward Moore on Nov. 24, 1934 and raised in Richmond Hill. Tom was a veteran of the Korean War and an employee of New York Telephone.

WORCESTER – William “Jack” Nagle, former Schenevus Central superintendent and ONC BOCES assistant superintendent, passed away on July 14, 2017, in the presence of his immediate family.

Jack was born May 10, 1933, in Troy, to William “Bill” and Julia (Graney) Nagle. His brother Tom came five years later and now lives in Las Vegas.

Jack was a 1951 graduate of Schenevus Central School, and received a bachelor’s in education at SUNY Oneonta, followed by a master’s from Albany State.

She is survived by her children; Richard (Ginny) Ruffles, Farrell Ruffles, Allen (Lisa) Ruffles, and Pamela (Michael) Simmons, her 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre deceased by her son Jeffrey Ruffles.

CHERRY VALLEY – Larry M. Thompson, 66, whose Larry’s Barber Shop was a center of community life for decades, passed away unexpectedly of a massive heart attack on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at his home.

Larry was the son of the late Edward Thompson and is survived by his mother, Helen Thompson.

He graduated from Cherry Valley Central School in 1969, and attended Royal Barber & Beauty School in Schenectady, where he obtained his barber license. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy where he served honorably.
