ONEONTA – Brian C. “Buzz” McMullen, 50, an outdoorsman who worked for Nelson’s Tree Service, passed away Feb. 24, 2018, at home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 9, 1967, in Oneonta, the son of Robert A. and Janice E. (Alger) McMullen, Sr.

Buzz was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved both immensely, being in his boat out on the lake or in the woods, watching the sun rise and set, being apart of nature. He also enjoyed camping and archery.

ONEONTA – Robert J. Heffernan Jr., 37, of Oneonta, who worked on the Hartwick College facilities staff, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, at home in Oneonta, due to complications from a long-term seizure disorder.

He was born on June 5, 1980, in Oneonta, the son of Robert J. and Nancy (Johns) Heffernan.  He graduated from Franklin Central School in June of 1999.

Robert was employed for a while as a facilities staff member at Hartwick College.

CHERRY VALLEY – Jean Cobb Zellers Roy, who retired to Cherry Valley 30 years ago after a career in education, passed away peacefully on Feb. 22, 2018, in Utica.

She was born Aug. 20, 1930, in Washington Township, N.J., to George Byran Zellers and Jessie May Cobb, and grew up on her father’s farm outside of Hackettstown, N.J.

ONEONTA – Margaret “Peggy” Umbach, 72, passed peacefully Feb. 28, 2018, at Albany Medical Center.

She was born April 16, 1945 in Oneonta, to Quentin and Mary Holmes, and raised by Burton and Winifred Miller.

Peggy married Victor H. Umbach on Oct. 9, 1965 at the West End Community Baptist Church, Oneonta.

ONEONTA –  Donald R. Stiefel, 92, a former D&H Gang leader, passed away March 6, 2018 at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 27, 1925 in Oneonta, the son of Frederick and Mabel (Moon) Stiefel.

Don was a United States Navy veteran serving from 1944 to 1946 in the Merchant Maines Convoy duty.

He married Margaret “Peg” Jordan on Sept. 19, 1946 at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

MILFORD – Ellery F. Bostwick, 70, a dairy farmer, 39-year volunteer firefighter and town justice, passed away March 16, 2018, at Bassett Hospital in the presence of his family.

He was born May 16, 1947, in Oneonta, the son of Ellery M. and Dorothy (Quick) Bostwick.

Ellery graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 1968. He married Linda Hinkley Aug. 4, 1968,  in Cooperstown Junction Methodist Church.

ONEONTA – Mary E. Rowley beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Nov. 26, 1924, to Francesco and Margaret (Sider) Patti in Batavia.

While Mary was attending nursing school at Warsaw Hospital, she met Dr. C. Douglas Rowley, who was completing his medical residency. They were married on Sept. 28, 1945.  In 1948, following Dr. Rowley’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Oneonta where he established his medical practice.

Probes Exonerated Bishop, Priest

ALBANY – Of the two priests with Otsego County ties named in “Hidden Disgrace III,” one pleaded guilty to sodomy, but the second was investigated twice and exonerated.

The report, prepared by Lawyers Helping Survivors of Child Sex Abuse and released today, appears to be a compilation of all allegations, whether or not they were proved.

For instance, retired Bishop Howard Hubbard is among the 42 priests listed.  In 2004, allegations surfaced that the bishop vehemently denied.  The diocese hired an outside law firm to investigate, and it found no “credible evidence” against him.

ONEONTA – William A. Sprague Jr., 82, who in the 1990s operated Billy’s Beef, a popular gathering spot and early local venue for karaoke, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, March 28, after a short illness.  His children Billy and Sarah were by his side.

Bill was born in Ithaca, the son of the late William Arthur Sprague and Monica Mullins Sprague.

He was educated in Ithaca Catholic schools and the Ithaca school system.  After graduation, he served in the Air Force in 1953-57.  He then entered the hospitality industry, first in Boulder, Colo., where he was an assistant manager at the Boulder Country Club and the general manager at the University Country Club.

FRANKLIN –  Lois J. Clark Stalter, 85, a lifelong farmer and mother of the late Dr. Kenneth D. Stalter, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

Lois was born on Feb. 28, 1933, in Delhi, to Lynn S. and Mildred (Truscott) Clark. She grew up on the family farm on Elk Creek Road with her brothers, David and Peter, and sister, Celia.

Lois was a farm girl and proud to drive the team of horses in the fields for her father.

She graduated from Delaware Academy, Class of 1951. She was the drum majorette in the band and played basketball and field hockey.

ONEONTA – It is with sadness and joy that the death of Susan Lynch, 84, on March 25, 2018, is told: Sadness for the loss of her and joy for her that she is now with family members and friends she loved and missed who are no longer on this earth.

Susan was born on Aug. 14, 1933, in Straths, Carndonagh, County Donegal, Ireland, to James Lynch and Rose Anne (Toland) Lynch.

She lived and worked on the family farm and a neighbor’s farm while young until she went to work off the farms at age 14.
