VIETNAM VET PUTS FLAG

AT HALF-STAFF IN VILLAGE

David Butler of Fly Creek takes flag protocol into his own hands a few minutes ago, lowering the Stars & Stripes at Main and Pioneer, Cooperstown, to half-staff in honor of the five Marines killed in Chattanooga, Tenn.,, last week in what the FBI is calling an instance of "domestic terrorism." Butler, whom Village Police arrested a few years ago in another flag-lowering incident, said it's a disgrace that the flag had not yet been lowered, particularly now that President Obama and Governor Cuomo has called for such action. David Butler of Fly Creek took flag protocol into his own hands a few minutes ago, lowering the Stars & Stripes at Main and Pioneer, Cooperstown, to half-staff in honor of the four Marines and one Navy Sailor killed in Chattanooga, Tenn., last week in what the FBI is calling an instance of “domestic terrorism.” Butler, whom Village Police arrested a few years ago in another flag-lowering incident, said it’s a disgrace that the flag had not yet been lowered, particularly now that President Obama and Governor Cuomo has called for such action.  Veterans’ posts throughout the region, including the Cooperstown Vets Club a half-block away, have lowered their flags in honor of their fallen comrades.  Butler, whose hands shook with Parkinson’s Disease as he retired the knot,  is classified as a 100 percent disabled veteran as a result of injuries sustained in Vietnam.   (Jim Kevlin/allotsego.com)
