Thomas A. Armstrong, 92;
‘Mr. Springfield’ For Decades,
Leading Town, School Boards
SPRINGFIELD – Thomas A. Armstrong, 92, influential town supervisor and school board president for decades, peacefully entered into eternal rest on May 20, 2019, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on May 1, 1927, in Cooperstown, the son of Beatrice and William Armstrong. Tom attended a one-room schoolhouse in Springfield.
On June 27, 1954, he married Lillian Plever. Together they have resided in Springfield Center their entire lives. Tom was a devoted Catholic who was very involved in his church.
In the early days Tom was employed at Beadle & Company, the Richfield Springs car dealership. From there he went on to open his own business, Armstrong Appliances & Dairy Equipment.
Prior to his decades as town supervisor, he served as president of the Springfield Central School Board.
After retirement, Tom’s work became helping his family. Sitting still was not his strong point.
He had a great love for farming and he worked on his son’s farm in Jordanville every chance he could, splitting daily milking duties well into his 80s.
He also loved carpentry. He helped build his children’s homes. Homes that are forever filled with his love. Tom was known as “Mr. Fix It” for all who loved him.
He lived for his family. They were his greatest accomplishment. He was the family rock and their protector. He enjoyed every moment he could with his family. He was proud of his family. His love for them will live inside of them forever.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years Lillian, sons Thomas (Wanda)Armstrong, Dennis (Doreen) Armstrong, and daughters Patricia (Willie) Rood, Diane Armstrong, and Eileen (Dave) Laatsch. Several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren AMD step-great-grandchildren.
The Armstrong family will receive relatives and friends 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Ottman Funeral Home in Cherry Valley.
A Catholic Mass and burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Cherry Valley.
