Kobey John King, 23: welder and dog lover

ONEONTA – Kobey John King was born at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta, NY on March 4, 1998. He died at age 23 as the result of a motorcycle accident in New Jersey on June 7, 2021. He is survived by his parents Tom and Jill King of Otego, NY. His grandparents, John and Jan Stankiewicz of Oneonta, NY. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Daniel Curtis, as well as two nephews and one niece. He also leaves a legacy of love and kindness with his friends and employers in New Jersey.

Kobey was a staggering 6 feet 4 inches tall, and his presence was larger than life.

He was dedicated to every job or task he set himself to, and he was greatly admired and respected by his employers. He was working as a welder at Exact Welding and Fabrication and was in the process of setting amazing new goals for himself and his future. When he was not working, he could be found at the racetrack racing his Mustang, enjoying life with the many friends he made, or spending time with his faithful rescued canine companion, Axel.

Kobey was full of kindness and always ready to help anyone he met. He was his Dad’s biggest fan, and loved watching him play baseball. He loved his family, especially his grandparents. He was a man of many talents—including welding and mechanic work, as well as pulling people into his orbit and treating them like family. He treated everyone with kindness and respect, and always knew how to have a good time. He had been riding motorcycles since he was three years old with his Dad. He was a safe driver and a beautiful soul taken from this Earth too soon.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday June 16th from 4-7 pm at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut Street, Oneonta at 10 am on Thursday, June 17, with the burial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for individuals to donate to their local Humane Society to honor his life, to pay forward the kindness he always exuded, and to honor his rescued companion, Axel.
