Oneonta Yellowjackets boys varsity football triumphed over the visiting Charles O. Dickerson Blue Raiders with a 31-14 victory this past Friday. The home game against the Trumansburg team promised to be a good matchup, as both teams came into the October 3rd showdown with a 3-1 record on the season.

The Yellowjackets took control early with a combination of a dominant defensive performance and an unstoppable running game. All of Oneonta High School’s scores came from running the ball. Quarterback Chase Jervis rushed for four out of the team’s five touchdowns on the night. Jervis ran for more than 170 yards total.

On the other side of the ball, Trumansburg’s offense could not get anything going. The Yellowjacket defense swarmed the ball anytime the Blue Raiders got any momentum going. The Yellowjackets controlled the game on both sides throughout all four quarters.

The night started off with the Yellowjackets winning the coin toss. They opted to defer the ball. And on the opening kickoff, the home team attempted an onside kick to surprise their visitors. The Blue Raiders managed to control the ball, though it amounted to nothing, as Oneonta held Trumansburg to five total yards on the first drive, forcing a three and out.

The Yellowjackets’ first drive went very differently. From the get-go, Oneonta’s running game bowled over the Blue Raiders defense. They got multiple 20+ yard runs during the first drive. The game’s opening score came on a 21-yard rush from Yellowjackets sophomore QB Jervis. He was able to fly past defenders and walk into the endzone untouched. After a successful extra point, the score was 7-0 Yellowjackets.

The Blue Raiders got the ball back and the Yellowjackets defense showed up once again. The Trumansburg QB threw an interception, giving Oneonta the ball right back. The Yellowjackets took advantage. During the first play of their second drive, their running back went for 35 yards—the game’s longest rush—and put Oneonta in optimal field position. After some miscues, the Yellowjackets saw themselves on 4th and 6. They made the decision to go for it, which worked out with the Yellowjackets converting and Jervis rushing for his second touchdown. The first quarter ended with a 13-0 score, after the Yellowjackets missed an extra-point opportunity.

Oneonta’s defense continued to bother the Blue Raiders offense, as Trumansburg’s next couple drives resulted in nothing. The Yellowjackets scored on a short run during their fifth drive, though missed another extra-point kick. The first half ended with the home team up 19-0.

Following the halftime show at OHS’s Lloyd Baker Field, the Yellowjackets’ run game stayed strong on their first offensive drive. Jervis scored his third running touchdown of the game, bringing the score to 25-0.

Oneonta’s defense forced the Trumansburg QB into another interception and took full control of the game. At the end of the third quarter, the score remained 25-0 with Oneonta trying to run out the clock. The Blue Raiders finally found some offense, driving down the field to get their first score of the game on a short passing play.

With the score now 25-6, the Blue Raiders and their fans perked up. But the hopes of a comeback were quickly crushed. The Yellowjackets raised their lead to 31-6 with another 21-yard rushing touchdown from their quarterback Jervis.

Trumansburg managed to score once more on a pass play. The Yellowjackets ran out the rest of the clock, however, and claimed a decisive 31-14 victory.

Friday’s win meant back-to-back victories for the Yellowjackets, bringing their record to 4-1.
