COOPERSTOWN – Sheriff Richard J. Devlin Jr. said today he has called in the state Commission of Corrections “to conduct a professional and impartial investigation” and bring to his attention “any concerns or issued that need to be addressed or corrected.”

“As your elected sheriff,” Devlin said in a statement released this afternoon, “I have a responsibility to identify and rectify issues if they exist to assure the public that we did everything within our capabilities to ensure that we are performing the job that is expected of us.”

The day after the county board’s Public Safety & Legal Affairs Committee released a statement saying it is investigating the role of the sheriff’s son, Sgt. Ros Devlin, in a “violent incident” at the jail in January, the elder Devlin reaffirmed that he asked the state police to investigate the matter, and the report is on District Attorney John D. Muehl’s desk.

He also said “he did FULLY comply” with the subpoena from the Public Safety Committee for personnel records, reacting to the committee’s statement, which said he did not “fully comply.”
