IN MEMORIAM: Gilbert F. Sherman, 90;
WWII Veteran, Wilber Bank Loan Officer
ONEONTA – Gilbert F. Sherman, 90, a World War II veteran and retired Wilber Bank loan officer, passed away on May 12, 2017 at Fox Nursing Home. Previously, he lived in Milford.
He was the husband of the late Jane (Schempf) Sherman. He was born on April 21, 1927 in Middleburgh, son of the late Lee and Edith (Fryar) Sherman. He graduated from Milford Central School in 1944. Gil served in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific during the World War II Army of Occupation as a radio man on a B-17.
Gil was an accomplished athlete, musician, and vocalist (tenor), and an exceptional Dad. He especially loved taking his family on cruise vacations. He played several years with the Milford Macs as a catcher. He sang in church choirs and minstrel shows, and also played the violin.
Prior to his retirement, Gil worked for Wilber National Bank as a highly respected loan officer. He served his community most notably as Rotary President and received the honorary award of Senior Citizen of the Year. He was a longtime member of the Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta and was a life member of Union Lodge #2 F&AM of Middlebury/Salisbury, Vt., and of the Milford American Legion Post 1566. Family and friends recently gathered together to celebrate his 90th birthday, and it was a glorious time!
Gil leaves a daughter Catherine Scoggins, and husband Richard, in Califorina; a son John, and his wife Anne, in Massachusetts; and a daughter Barbara Tateosian, and her husband Glenn, in Florida. He leaves eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Donald, of Camillus; a brother, Stewart, and his wife Cindy of Manlius; as well as several nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by Donald’s wife, Jane, in February of this year.
A celebration of his life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta. Interment will follow at Milford Cemetery.
