IN MEMORIAM: ‘Stub’ Hunt, 82; Ran Gas Station
FLY CREEK – George “Stub” D. Hunt, 82, who owned Hunt’s Gulf Station at Chestnut and Elm, Cooperstown, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 at Bassett Hospital after an extended illness. Stub was born on Oct. 14, 1931, at home in Paines Hollow, Herkimer County, to William B. and Catherine (Mosher) Hunt. He was raised in the Mohawk area and graduated from Mohawk High School, Class of 1950. On April 14, 1987, he married Gladys Chase in Fly Creek.
Over his life he was employed at Comstock’s Gulf Station in Mohawk, Univac in Utica, and Dufold Knitting Mill in Mohawk. Subsequently he bought Hunt’s, where Triple AA is now, and joined Cooperstown Central School as a custodian and bus driver. He retired in 1992.
A retired member of the Mohawk Fire Department, he enjoyed gardening, woodworking (especially the creation of bluebird houses), NASCAR (and his favorite driver, Mark Martin), hunting, football (and his beloved Bills) and telling and playing practical jokes on his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys; his children, Tammy (Chipper) Bailey, George D. (Terese) Hunt, Jr., and Donna (Ruben) Hunt; his step-children, Brian Forbes, Annette Forbes and Kay Dowd; his grand-children Alyssa and Cody Bailey, Alyssa and Ethan Hunt, Catherine and Dayton Carney, Nicholas and Colby Forbes and one great-grandson, Jaceyn Andrew Bailey. Also, his sisters, Ann Soposki, Betty Smith, Jean (Robert) Mang and brothers, William B. (Barbara) Hunt, Jr. and Russell (Marianne) Hunt, a brother-in-law, Jerry Mitchell, a Godson, William B. Hunt, III, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Lester Hunt and sisters, Dorothy Hunt, Louise Edick and Nancy Mitchell.
The memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, at Tillapaugh Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ronald Fralick, pastor of the Cherry Valley Presbyterian Church, officiating. Calling hours will be from 2 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
