Raccoon Tests Rabid

In Town Of Milford

MILFORD – A raccoon tested positive for rabies today in the Town of Milford, the Otsego County Department of Health reports.

This is the second case of rabies reported in the county this year.  The first was reported Aug. 10 in Mount Vision.

In today’s case, the raccoon was killed by a dog whose rabies vaccinations were not up to date; the dog will be placed on a six-month quarantine.

Rabies is a fatal viral infection that can be transmitted by the bite of an infected animal.  The health department cautioned the public to stay away from any stray or wild animal.

Under New York State law, all dogs, cats and ferrets are required to be vaccinated.

Anyone who believes he or she has witnessed a possible case of rabies should call the health department at 607-547-4230, or visit the website at www.otsegocounty.com
