IN MEMORIAM: Dennis ‘Shorty’ Kearney, 62;

Marine Worked With Cars, Owned Race Car

Dennis “Shorty” Kearney

ONEONTA – Dennis James “Shorty” Kearney, 62, a Marine who loved cars, passed away on Saturday, June 3, 2017.

Dennis was born on Feb. 9, 1955, in Oneonta, a son of the late Robert E. and Helen (Root) Kearney. He grew up in Oneonta and attended Oneonta High School, then studied auto mechanics at SUNY Delhi. Following his graduation from Delhi, Shorty enlisted in the Marine Corps.

In his spare time Shorty loved working on cars, which led him to having part ownership in a race car. When the opportunity presented itself, Dennis would grab his fishing pole and spend the day fishing. He had the distinctive laugh of an Irishman and will be deeply missed by one and all.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Paula Kearney; his four children, Robert (Brandi) Kearney, Curtis (Tess) Kearney, Michelle Kearney, and Denny Kearney; his step-father, Ralph Dawson; his brother, Timothy Kearney; and his two sisters, Pat (Bill) Moore and Lark (Keith) Byam. He is also survived by family friends, Rose Millias and Steve Kelly; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, cousins, and loyal friends. His love of family and friends knew no bounds.

He was predeceased by his parents; his uncle, Orris “Pudge” Root, and his aunt, Daphna Crain.

Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oneonta, during which time his family will receive guests.

Shorty will be laid to rest in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta, following a graveside memorial service with military honors at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 16, with the Rev. Judith Thistle, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, Shorty’s family requests that you kindly consider making a charitable donation in his memory to the Oneonta Veterans Club, American Legion Post #259, 279 Chestnut Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.
