ONEONTA – Hilda S. Mercun, 94, of Oneonta, one of the organizers of what became today’s Sidney Federal Credit Union, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at Fox Hospital.

She was born June 19, 1920, in Herminie, Pa., the daughter of Anthony and Agnes (Kodrich) Slivsek.

Hilda was married to Joseph F. Mercun on Nov. 21, 1940 in Worcester.  The couple lived in Philadelphia and in Freehold, N.J., before moving to Oneonta in 1950.

Mrs. Mercun She was employed as a secretary at the Railway Express Agency in Philadelphia and the Karageushen Rug Manufacturing Co. in Freehold.  In Oneonta, she worked for the F.J. Hauschild Manufacturing Co. and SUNY Oneonta, retiring in 1985 after 35 years of service.

Hilda was one of the organizers and secretary of the original Otsego County Civil Service Employees Federal Credit Union, which grew into today’s SFCU.

Hilda was an active member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta and served as a volunteer there.  She served on the Office Practices Committee of the BOCES in 1969-1990 and was a volunteer income tax preparer under the AARP/IRS volunteer program since 1984.

A member of the Oneonta Business Woman’s Club since 1958, she was also one of the organizers and served as secretary/treasurer of SUNY Oneonta’s Golden Alumni, made up of retired support employees.

Hilda was an avid photographer.  She loved to travel, visiting Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Canada, Nova Scotia, Mexico and most of the continental U.S.  She took various Caribbean cruises and a trip through the Panama Canal.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, of 72 years and her sister, Agnes S. Burns.  She is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Massachusetts.

A funeral mass will be at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at St. Mary’s, with the Rev. David Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating.  Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 22, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.
