Leland C. Smith, 96;

Retired Bassett Employee

COOPERSTOWN – Leland C. Smith, 96, a World War II veteran who spent his career in Bassett Hospital’s business office, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, at Promenade Assisted Living in Chestnut Ridge, Rockland County.
Leland was born on Feb. 5, 1922, in Cooperstown, to Ethel and Charles Smith. He died less than a week before his 97th birthday.
A Marine, he was a member of the “Greatest Generation,” serving in the Pacific theater during World War II.
Soon after returning from service, he married Genevieve Gandle on Sept. 15, 1945, and they enjoyed a 69-year marriage together, mostly in his native Cooperstown, before moving to Pearl River in 2009 and to senior assisted living in 2014.
