IN MEMORIAM:  ‘Spike’ Boyd, 61; Town of Otsego Highway Superintendent

FLY CREEK – Louie C. “Spike” Boyd, 61, of Fly Creek, former Town of Otsego highway superintendent, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon June 9, 2014, at Bassett Hospital.

A Cooperstown Native Son, he was born Aug. 13, 1952 at Bassett, the son of Louie C. and Dorothy (Harrison) Boyd, Sr. He graduated from Cooperstown High School, Class of 1970, then from SUNY Cobleskill with an associate degree. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Clark, on Oct. 23, 1976 in Cooperstown.

Spike worked at the Town of Otsego Highway Department for 33 years, 18 as superintendent. He retired, then worked for five years as plant superintendent at Suit-Kote Asphalt Corp., Oneonta.

Spike was a lifetime member of the National Skeet Shooting Association and a member of the state Skeet Shooting Association, participating in shoots in New York, Nebraska, Oregon, Vermont and Canada.  He reached one of his goals of shooting over 100,000 lifetime registered targets in August of 2011. He was an active member of the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Association.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by many family and friends who he dearly loved.

At his request there will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the “Heitman Mitchell Memorial Fund,” an organization that supports young people entering the shooting sports, c/o Cory Cooley, 418 Cook Road, Litchfield, NY 13340, or to the Cooperstown Sportsmen’s Association “Shoot for a Cure II” event c/o Gary Kuch, PO Box 984, Cooperstown, NY 13326.  All funds raised at this event will go to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the care of Tillapaugh Funeral Service.
