Sidewalk Work Wraps Up

In Railroad Avenue Area

Lloyd Stilson of Cooperstown’s DPW smooths out cement a few minutes ago in front of Spurbeck’s Grocery on Railroad Avenue. For the past two weeks, the crew has been replacing sidewalks on Railroad, Upper Main and Glen Avenue. Assisting Stilson are, from left, Jason Brengel, Nate Whitehead, Zach Crippen and Streets Superintendent Chris Satriano. This fall, the crew is planning to repave Mill Street, near Bassett Hospital, and adding sidewalks there, Satriano said. (Jim Kevlin/

After Thunderstorm

The whirring sound of the village’s “Bandit Intimidator” wood chipper is being heard throughout Cooperstown today, as crews, including Assistant DPW Superintendent Chris Satriano, above, finish the cleanup after Saturday’s thunderstorm. Heavy rains and wind struck shortly before 6 p.m. for only a minute or two, but wreaked outsized damage. Among the homes narrowly escaping serious damage is Celia Lamb’s on Linden Avenue, inset. The storm knocked over an oak slightly to the north of the house, leveraged up the sidewalk, but beyond that even missed a birdhouse in its path. “We were very fortunate,” Mrs. Lamb said. “It missed the house, it missed the car and it missed the trailer” that a tenant rents. (Jim Kevlin/ It might for a good idea to consider phoning Beneficial Roofing at (901) 979-9931 if you feel your home has been damaged due to the storm to gain a better idea of how to tackle the job.
