COOPERSTOWN BAT FACILITY IN FLAMES

COOPERSTOWN BAT

FACILITY IN FLAMES

Victoria Claudy of Hartwick was at the scene at the end of Poplar Street in Hartwick hamlet this evening as flames consumed the former mill there. “This is a piece of Hartwick’s history going down in flames,” she reported.  “I was able to get very close to the fire to capture these photos.”  The building was still burning as the sun went down. The lower right photo shows the corner of the building where a neighbor first reported seeing flames.

HARTWICK – A long-vacant sawmill in this hamlet that Cooperstown Bat Co. reopened just a couple of weeks ago to manufacture billets for baseball bats was destroyed this evening in a smokey blaze.

Fire departments from Hartwick, Hartwick Seminary, Cooperstown, Milford, Fly Creek, Mount Vision, Laurens and Edmeston responded to a 6:20 p.m. call and were still pouring water on the structure at the end of Popular Street as the sun went down two hours later.

By then, flames were no longer evident, but billows of smoke were coming out from under the eaves of the low-slung red building, about 50 yards long.

If you're in downtown Cooperstown over the next hour, you may see this crew from Opposable Thumbs, a San Diego based marketing agency, creating footage for a TV ad campaign planned by Mavis Discount Tire. Producer Jason Taragan said the spot is built around a family vacation and, "as a destination, Cooperstown's a great place for a family get-away." The spot begins with a dad, mom, son and daughter coming out of Cooperstown Bat Co. onto the Main Street sideway. This afternoon, the crew, which is based in New York City, planned to shoot additional footage at the Stokes Farm on Pink Street, Town of Middlefield. Taragan said Nancy Angerer of Cooperstown was the local contact in setting up the shoot; "she's been great," he said. (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
Margaret Jarvie of Downingtown, Pa., second from right, niece of Cooperstown’s Melanie Boyer, was in the cast of the commercial filmed Sunday in Cooperstown by a crew from  Opposable Thumbs, a San Diego marketing agency.  The crew was creating footage for a TV ad campaign planned by Mavis Discount Tire; today, action shifted to Mavis’ Johnson City store, according to Melanie, who said her niece has appeared in several TV spots in the Philadelphia market. Producer Jason Taragan said the spot is built around a family vacation and, “as a destination, Cooperstown’s a great place for a family get-away.” The ad begins with a mom, son and two daughters coming out of Cooperstown Bat Co. onto the Main Street sidewalk.  Taragan said this is Mavis’ first foray into regional TV advertising, aimed to benefit its stores in the Northeast U.S.  This afternoon, the crew, which is based in New York City, planned to shoot additional footage at the Stokes Farm on Pink Street, Town of Middlefield. Taragan said Nancy Angerer of Cooperstown was the local contact in setting up the shoot; “she’s been great,” he said. (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
