To Consider Brookwood

The garden house at Brookwood Gardens, designed in the 19-teens by Fredrick dePeyster Townsend, a Buffalo native, graduate of Harvard’s first landscape architecture class, and an up and coming landscape architect in his own right. Under Fredrick’s direction, the property flourished. From 1915 through 1920 he and Katherine designed the gardens, with terracing to follow the natural contours of the land, and the fantastic snug Garden House. Swiss and Italian craftsmen were imported to build the Garden House and it became a favorite place for Katherine and Fredrick to entertain.

FLY CREEK – As suggested by Cooperstown trustees the other evening, the Otsego Town Board will consider whether to play a role in preserving Brookwood Gardens for public use, Town Supervisor Anne Geddes Atwell said today.

“Once I meet with the board and we discuss it, I will be able to give more specific information on that,” she said.  “I am gratified to have the opportunity to consider the idea.”

The next regular town board meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 8, so a decision could be made prior to the Otsego Land Trust’s Sept. 30 deadline on RFPs (requests for proposals) on use of the north half of the 22 acre parcel on Otsego Lake.
