COOPERSTOWN – The Democrats, it appears, have it.

Republicans failed to file notice by the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline to hold a nominating caucus for Cooperstown’s March 15 village elections, according to county Democratic chair Richard Abbate.

That means incumbent Mayor Jeff Katz and two Democratic trustees will be unopposed for reelection.

Trustee Richard Sternberg, recently appointed by Katz, has indicated he will run for a full term.  When last questioned, Trustee Bruce Maxson, the county public defender, said he hasn’t made up his mind; Katz said he hopes Maxson runs again.

A call to county Republican chair Vince Casale, who handled village elections in the last cycle, has not yet been returned.

The Democratic caucus is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday in Village Hall.
