COOPERSTOWN – The Cooperstown Central school board this morning appointed Michael K. Virgil as interim superintendent to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Superintendent C.J. Hebert earlier this month.

Virgil was a longtime superintendent of Morris Central School District, serving there from December 1997 to June 2009, when he retired.

Since, he has served interim roles in several districts, most recently as superintendent at Jefferson Central and interim principal in the Walton and Franklin districts, as well as several other interim positions within school districts and ONC BOCES.

The appointment is through the end of this year.

“Mr. Virgil brings a significant amount of experience to the district and will help move the district forward,” Board President Dr. Theresa Russo said.

Hebert and the CCS board had initiated a plan to realign administrative roles and hire a new high school principal.  That plan will continue, according to Russo.

In addition, the hiring process of a new elementary principal will continue, with principal interviews to be rescheduled within the next two weeks. The search for a junior-senior high school principal will begin immediately and the search for a new superintendent will start over the next few months.

The current junior-senior principal, Michael Cring, will be transitioning to K-12 director of comprehensive student services, programs and athletics.

“It’s a sad circumstance that I take this position in the Cooperstown Central School District and look forward to assisting the district in this difficult transition and moving it forward,” Virgil said.
