Council May Hire Consultant

To Study Geothermal Heating

ONEONTA – Common Council Tuesday will consider a $10,000 contract with consultant Egg Geo, St. Petersburg, Fla., to look at possible benefits of geothermal heating.

Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, following a 6:30 p.m. reception in City Hall lobby to recognize the city’s 2019 Women Trailblazer Award winners Kelly Ames and Carol Mandigo.

Keynoting at the Otsego Chamber’s Energy Summit in January, Egg Geo principal Jay Egg talked about creating a “loop” when water and sewer lines are replaced that could be tapped into by businesses and homeowners seeking to use the energy efficient heat source.

At the time, it was suggested that if the water line system some in the Town of Oneonta are hoping to install on Southside, that might be the basis a loop that would lend itself to geothermal solutions.

The resolution Common Council members will consider asks Egg to check “the feasibilities of using City-owned utilities installations as potential energy sources for geothermal heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.”
