Bear Spottings Peak About Now

As Priems, Sternberg Can Avow

This young fella is headed for a trash can on Lou and Brigitte Priem’s porch in recent days at the couple’s Lakeview Lodge, Town of Middlefield. This has happened to the Priems before, but they were surprised the cub in broad daylight, instead of dawn or dusk, which is more typical. Richard Sternberg, Cooperstown village trustee, reported that he happened upon a bear cub in the middle of County Route 31 (East Lake Road) the other day, about a half-mile north of Glimmerglass State Park in the Town of Springfield. He braked and the tot scramble off the pavement into the woods. According to the DEC, most bear spottings in Upstate New York happen in late spring and early summer – right about now.
