IN MEMORIAM: Wayne Heck Sr., 79;
D&H Railroad Engineer For 20 Years
ONEONTA – Wayne R. Heck, Sr., 79, an engineer with the D&H Railroad for 20 years, passed away comfortably surrounded by his family on March 3, 2016, at Fox Nursing Home, after a long illness.
He was born June 28, 1936, in Oneonta, the son of the late Charles and Eva (Oliver) Heck.
Wayne married Margo Wayman on Nov. 10, 1958, in Oneonta.
He was Air Force veteran.
After leaving the D&H, he was a mail carrier for the Oneonta School District.
He was a former member of the Otsego Mountaineer CB Club. He enjoyed being outdoors camping and fishing, and he especially loved boating.
The family gives a special thank you to the staff on Fox Nursing Home’s Unit 3, and to Catskill Area Hospice for the care Wayne received.
In addition to his wife, Margo Heck of Oneonta; he is survived by a son, Wayne Heck Jr. of Mount. Vision; a daughter, Deborah Janitz (Michael) of Oneonta; grandchildren Wayne Hack III (Tammy); Joseph Janitz (Lacey), Melissa Duchaime, Nathan Anderson, Aaron Heck and Joshua Anderson; 10 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Charles Heck (Betty) of Rome, Mildred Babcock (Ralph) of Sidney, and Lillian Olson of Bloomville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Judy Anderson; his grandson, Michael Janitz, brother Robert Heck and a sister, Josephine Mongillo.
Calling hours will be 4-5 p.m. with the funeral service at 5 p.m. Friday, March 11, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, 51 Dietz St., Oneonta. Maj. James Smith from the Salvation Army will be officiating.
