At Mel’s, Thursday’s Dinner
Echoed Titanic’s Fateful One
COOPERSTOWN – Mel’s on 22 joined many restaurants last evening in commemorating the fateful last meal aboard the “unsinkable” Titanic, which sank in the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an icebear.
Mel’s propietor Brian Wrubleski served a menu that echoed the Titanic’s, including local wild ramp, roasted halibut, duck breast and bison, finishing the meal for a dozen participating dines with a duo of desserts, all matched with Napa Valley’s Trinchero Estates wines.
The evening was hosted by Wrubleski’s daughter, manager Alex Gunther. Wine
expert Julie McCarthy of Southern Wine & Spirits acted as guide, describing each
course and the matching vintage. Wines ranged from a Chenin Blanc and Viognier to a
Barbera and was topped off with a Zinfandel Port.
Guests Vera and Bruno Talevi were pleased with the pairings commenting to Chef Brian
“What a marvelous evening,” said Bruno Talevi, attending with wife Vera. Other attendees included Margie and Ed Landers, himself a wine aficionado, and former village mayor Carol B. Wallesr and her husband Bill.
