Local Indivisible Groups Sponsor No Kings 4, ‘Get-Out-the-Early-Vote’

ONEONTA—On Saturday, October 17 from noon to 1 p.m., CooperstownOneonta Indivisible, Butternut Valley Indivisible, Indivisible for Schoharie County and Cherry Valley Indivisible are participating in the No Kings Coalition’s nationwide day of action: “No Kings 4 Get Out the Early Vote!” The groups will hold a rally at Neawha Park adjacent to the Brenner Building, one of Otsego County’s two early voting sites, followed by a march to Main Street.

The short rally will include performances by talented local vocalists Yolanda Bush and Devon LaBoy, after which rally goers will line up in front of the Brenner Building to march up to Main Street with signs carrying the message to “Vote Early!” People who can’t do the march are welcome to join the line up on Main Street with “get out and vote” signs and messages, officials said. The rally and march will be peaceful, family-friendly, and encouragement to Upstate New Yorkers to fully practice their democratic voting rights and civic responsibility.

“Driving up the early vote numbers is the surest way to make certain people who like to sow doubts in our elections will have less to complain about on Election Day and after,” asserted CooperstownOneonta Group Leader Virginia Kennedy, “Democracy is not a spectator sport—it’s a responsibility with outcomes that determine the quality of our lives in America.”

On Saturday, October 10, CooperstownOneonta Indivisible also participated in a large multi state bannering action planned across northeast highways and on streets throughout New York and New England called “Honk and Waves.” Group members were out on Main Street in Cooperstown and Main Street in Oneonta, encouraging people to practice their rights and vote.

“We went out on the streets of Cooperstown and Oneonta to remind and encourage our neighbors to vote,” explained Alex Fisher, CooperstownOneonta group member who organized the event with Cooperstown residents and group members Molly Hernandez and Veerle Denean.

“We got thumbs up, honks, waves, and much general good will from drivers and pedestrians. It gave me hope that we will save and restore our democracy,” Fisher continued.

Along with these two public events, the four local Indivisible group sponsors will continue to participate in get-out-the vote efforts like canvassing and phone banking as well as supporting other public get-out-the-vote gatherings through Election Day on Tuesday, November 3.
