COOPERSTOWN – William Crankshaw, superintendent of Remsen Central schools in the Adirondacks since 2013, was appointed Cooperstown Central superintendent, effective Jan. 1, when the school board met this evening.

“I feel this is a district I can fit with,” said Crankshaw, adding his only disappointment is “I can’t start right away.”

Dr. Crankshaw began his education career as a music teacher in Fort Plain, Johnstown and Canajoharie school districts before moving onto roles as principal of Glebe St. Elementary School in Johnstown and principal/director of elementary curriculum and instruction in the Northville Central School District.

He majored in music at Ithaca College, graduating in 1989, and went on for a master’s in music at the College of St. Rose, obtaining his doctorate of educational leadership from The Sage Colleges in 2011.

He succeeds C.J. Hebert, who died in an ATV crash in March.  Michael Virgil, the retired Morris Central superintendent, will continue to fill an interim role through the end of the years.
