COOPERSTOWN – As he was preparing for Cooptoberfest Saturday, Oct. 8, Village Police Chief Mike Covert received word of three heroin overdoses, in Richfield Springs, Schenevus and West Oneonta.

Two of the three – in Schenevus and West Oneonta – turned out to be fatal, he said during a talk this afternoon to a Friends of the Village Library’s Sunday Series in Village Hall.

The next day, there were three more overdoses, one in each of those towns, said Covert.  The chief said Sunday one of those resulted in a fatality, but amended that today:  The two Saturday fatalities are the only ones so far.

The drug turned out to be heroin laced with fentanyl, a deadly artificial supplement.

“And it’s been going on every day since,” he said, with police agencies throughout the county focused on discovering where the deadly combination is coming from in order to stem the flow, and the fatalities.

The fentanyl mix is particularly dangerous because resulting overdoses don’t respond to Narcan, the drug that can half overdoses of straight heroin, said the chief, who has been in an innovative leader in the county’s heroin-fighting efforts
