Cooperstown Mayor Jeff Katz, a Chicago Cubs fan from his days at the Mercantile Exchange, sends greetings from Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, where his beloved Cubbies are facing the Indians this evening in the World Series. If the Cubs win, it will be their first championship since 1908. In addition to serving as mayor, Katz is a published baseball writer with two books to his credit and an aficionado of America’s Pastime.
Killer Knapp Dies In Prison; Guilty In SUNY Coed’s Death ONEONTA – Ricky Knapp, the man convicted of the 1977 death of SUNY Oneonta student, has died in Mohawk Correctional Facility, according to prison records. Knapp, 66, died March 8, having served 40 years of a 25-to-life sentence for a 1978 manslaughter conviction in the death of 18-year-old Linda Velzy, a SUNY student from Long Island. According to reports, Velzy was last seen Dec. 9 1977, hitchhiking in downtown Oneonta.…
COOPERSTOWN – Wendell Tripp passed away September 20, 2023.
He was born June 1, 1928, in Walden, the son of Eva Welsch Tripp and Wendell E. Tripp Sr. He graduated from Walden High School in June 1946 and joined the U.S. Navy the day after graduation. He served in the Navy for three years, much of that time aboard the light cruisers USS Wilkes Barre and USS Huntington.
Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended Drew University, majoring in English literature, and received the BA degree in 1953. He then received the MA degree in American History from the University of Michigan and the PhD from the Faculty of Political Science at Columbia University.…
