IN MEMORIAM: Helen S. McMullen, 93;
Retired From Farming, Volunteer At Fox
DAVENPORT – Helen Christine Sperry McMullen, 93, a volunteer at Fox Hospital for more than 25 years after retiring from farming, passed away on Thursday evening, April 27, 2017 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford.
Born on Dec. 21, 1923, near Davenport, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Aimee (Bourne) Sperry. She graduated from Worcester Central School, where she met her husband Thomas. The couple was married on Feb. 12, 1944. She trained as a baby nurse at Albany Infant Home. She and Thomas bought a dairy farm in Davenport and ran it for over 40 years.
Mrs. McMullen was a hard-working farm wife, known for her pies and numerous beautiful quilts. She also had a small business known as Helen’s House Plants, she also had beautiful vegetable and flower gardens.
Helen was an 81-year member of the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church in Davenport, where she sang in the choir for over 50 years.
She was predeceased her beloved husband Thomas in 2012, after 68 years of marriage; also, a brother, Walter Sperry; grandson Matthew McMullen; and a son-in-law: Rev. George Rynick.
Helen is survived by her children, Carleen Rynick, Timothy (Maureen) McMullen, Thomas Daniel (Rita) McMullen and Christine McMullen; grandchildren Julia Thomas, Heather Bryla, Michelle VonSutphen, Christopher McMullen, Andrew MacLaury, Jared Burger, Thomas McMullen, Emily Beuk and Brendan O’Brien; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, Route 23, Davenport. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at the church, where friends and relatives are also invited to call on the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Davenport Cemetery.
