IN MEMORIAM: Madeline Santos, 100;
Enjoyed Long Life In Sixth Ward Home
ONEONTA – Madeline P. Santos, 100, said goodbye on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, to the life she treasured. She had been living at Fox Nursing Home since August 2016.
Mickey was born on Love Joy Street, Buffalo, on Oct. 23, 1918 to Paolo and Giulia (Stirpi) Spaziani. Much of her life was spent on the North end of Miller Street in her beloved Sixth Ward, AKA, the Lower Deck.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Ernest (Santodonato) Santos and Clifford Wilson; her stepdaughter, Marie; her daughter, Julianne; her sisters, Jenny and Mary; her brothers, Angelo, Alex and Paul; her sister-in-law, Vita; her special friends, Sadie Nader and Jim Lange, as well as many others.
Mickey is survived by her sons, Philip and Lawrence (Larry) Santos, her adored grandchildren, Scott Santos, Laura Ruby, Jessica Neander and Stephanie Santos; nine great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Nancy Elliott (Phil) and Marla (Emerson) Santos (Larry); her sister, Connie; and her many beloved and cherished nieces and nephews; her “very special” extended family, Linda Bouton and the “Entire” Vergari and Avanzato families; her favorite sister-in-law, Charlotte; and her good neighbors, Sister Florence “Floody” Gioia, Vickie, Jack, Jacob and Renee, Wayne and Linda, Gina, Neil and Joyce, Rich and Carol and Doug and Beverly.
Mom worked at various locales, Dress Factories, The Lehigh Valley R.R. during WWII, Enterprise Aluminum Co., MAMCO, the Vergari household, Valleyview School with Principal and friend John Higgins.
A fear she never experienced: having dirty hands. Mom, we hope that wherever you are is identical to your favorite place on earth; your backyard. May your sun always shine brightly, may your sky always be blue. Listen carefully, your cardinals are singing to you, saying…Arrivederci, Michelina.
Calling hours will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta. A funeral mass will be at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018 in St. Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, with the Rev. David Mickiewicz officiating.
Burial will be in the spring in the Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.
