League Threatens

To Call Off Debate

At least twice, League of Women Voters’ officials threatened to halt this evening’s debate between county Sheriff Richard J. Devlin, Jr., and retired state trooper Bob Fernandez as a rowdy SRO audience applauded against instructions and Fernandez repeatedly declined to followed the debate rules and time constraints.  When League organizers chided the audience, it responded with catcalls.  Here, when moderator Barbara Heim challenged audience members to take over if they thought they could do a better job, Tom Leiber of Cooperstown, a high school pal of Fernandez, jumped up and offered to do so.  (Jim Kevlin/AllOTSEGO.com)
