HARTWICK –  Caution:  Slow down – AND STOP! – on Route 205 through Hartwick hamlet.

That means YOU!

For decades, at the intersection of Route 205 and County Route 11 only east-west Route 11 traffic had stop signs.

As of today, with no fanfare, the state DOT installed stop signs for drivers on north-south Route 205.

TO MAKE THIS CLEAR:  As of now, all drivers MUST STOP at Routes 205 and 11 in downtown Hartwick hamlet.

PUT ANOTHER WAY:  It is now a four-way stop!!

This, according to state DOT spokesman for Region 9, Dave Hamburg, is intended to enhance “pedestrian safety.”

“We recognize that more people are using that area, and we wanted to enhance the safety,” said Hamburg. “It’s a pro-active approach.”

Enhancements will also be made to pavement markings, he said, adding, “We’ll also make upgrades to the pavement itself, once the weather cooperates.”

Digital message signs will be posted to alert drivers to the change, but ultimately, Hamburg said, the responsibility lies with the driver to PAY ATTENTION!  (Editor’s Note: caps and exclamation mark added.) “People always need to be prepared to stop,” he said.
