COOPERSTOWN
May 27 and 28, Cooperstown Central School students competed in the annual New York State Envirothon at SUNY Cortland. The competing team consisted of Owen Capozza, Xavier Wilcox, Annika Murray, and siblings Ada and Elias MacLeish. They were coached by Amy Parr, an Envirothon veteran who has mentored CCS teams for years. She teaches life science at CCS. The yearly contest allows students to compete in various areas of study, such as forestry, soils, wildlife, aquatics, and current issues, and to share an oral presentation about a selected topic. This year, the oral presentation focused on non-point source pollution, or NPS, in an imaginary New York county.
The Cooperstown team was successful, placing 17th out of 58 teams from all across New York State. As three of the team’s members had not been to the state competition before, spirits were high and all were excited to take part. During the competition, CCS students also had the opportunity to participate in a college/career fair featuring New York State colleges and job opportunities in the environmental and natural resources fields.
Annika Murray is a student at Cooperstown Central School.
