Chervillians Gearing Up for Kite Fest

CHERRY VALLEY—The popular Cherry Valley Kite Festival, organized by Cherry Valley Artworks, returns on Friday, September 25 and Saturday, September 26 with precision kite teams, live music, local vendors, delicious food, and an opportunity to make your own kite.

Kiters from all over the United States gather for this family-friendly event. The action kicks off on Friday at 6 p.m. with a Kite Building Workshop for all ages at the Old School gymnasium on Genesee Street. This mini-kite workshop is free and is followed by an Indoor Kite Fly at 7 p.m.

It’s a bright and early start on Saturday, with a Kid’s Kite Building Workshop, also held in the Old School gym. The $5.00 fee includes all materials. The All Day Outdoor Fly begins at 10 a.m. on the hillside of Glensfoot Farm, Campbell Road. Admission is $5.00 per person and includes parking; children under 10 admitted free of charge. Parking for people with disabilities is available. The outdoor fly runs until 5 p.m. and will feature precision kite flying performances, fighter kite battles and the “running of the bols”—an interactive race where participants of various age groups drag large, parachute-style kits known as bols across the field—giant kites (weather permitting), kite building and public flying.

The Cherry Valley Kite Festival is a biennial, grassroots festival that regularly draws 1,200-1,500 attendees and kite flyers from across the U.S. and Canada. Since 2009, Cherry Valley Artworks has been hosting performances, classes, and special events and installations at The Star Theater in Cherry Valley. For more information, visit cvartworks.org.
