Cooperstown Rotary Donates School Supplies
COOPERSTOWN—During the month of August, the Rotary Club of Cooperstown collected bags and bags of elementary school supplies. School goodies, pencils, pens, glue sticks, and other necessities were contributed by Rotary Club members at the weekly luncheon meetings, officials said in a press release.
Susan Miosek, a retired teacher and Rotarian, was chair of this effort. Miosek said she was “pleased by the generous outpouring of supplies by our club members as we sought to support our local students and teachers at the beginning of the new school year.”
The bags of supplies were presented to the Cooperstown Elementary School the first week of September.
Amy Malcuria, Cooperstown Elementary School principal, thanked Miosek and the Rotary Club for the outpouring of supplies. She noted that she distributes the items anonymously to any student needing a pencil, eraser, etc. Malcuria also has an open supply table, where students can pick and choose whatever they need.
One of Rotary’s pillars, or core areas of focus, is support for basic education and literacy. Throughout September, Rotary International gives special acknowledgement to the many ways the Rotary community supports education for children and literacy for both children and adults. Rotary International works worldwide to strengthen communities, support basic education and increase adult literacy for the more than 775 million illiterate people globally, officials said.
It is through local clubs like Cooperstown’s that Rotary gives back to the community, with its members living the motto of “Service above self.”
