Fixture Of Cooperstown’s Social Life

Dr. Gerald Evans

COOPERSTOWN – The family of Dr. Gerald Evans, the retired Bassett Hospital ophthalmologist, sadly announces his passing on Aug. 30, 2017, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

Gerald was born in Brooklyn on Feb. 13, 1930. He attended the Bronx High School of Science, Columbia University, where he was manager of the undefeated 1951 basketball team, and the New York Medical College.

After serving in the Air Force as a medical officer, he trained as an ophthalmologist at NYU and Bellevue Hospitals, and established his practice on Staten Island.

In 1985, Gerald moved to Cooperstown, where he joined the staff of the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital.  For more than 30 years Gerald and his wife Anne became fixtures of Cooperstown.

Ever the optimist, Gerald was a man of wit, humor and humanism, and always left a smile on the face of those who met him. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his second wife, Anne, his former wife Joan Evans, his two daughters, Leslie and Julie Evans, and stepsons Charles, James and Julian Hyman.
