COOPERSTOWN – While the Richfield town supervisor GOP primary yesterday yielded a clear winner – Paul Palumbo, 158, over incumbent Fran Enjem, 95 – both Hartwick town supervisor primaries are so close the outcome won’t be known until absentee ballots are counted a week from today, Sept. 18, according to Republican Elections Commissioner Sheila Ross.

In the Republican primary, Hartwick Fire Chief Bob O’Brien narrowly edged two-term incumbent Dave Butler.  In the Democratic primary, Town Board member Julie Sharratt narrowly edged O’Brien, who had cross-filed.

In the Hartwick GOP primary, it was Butler 49, O’Brien 50, with five write-in votes uncounted.  In the Democratic primary, it was Sharratt 34, O’Brien 33, with 10 write-ins uncounted.  In the Conservative primary, it was Butler 3, with four uncounted ballots.

The other notable primary Thursday – the polls were open from noon to 9 p.m. – saw longtime Republican county Rep. Betty Ann Schwerd, Edmeston, bested by newcomer Dan Wilber, the Town of Burlington justice, 3 to 15. Wilber will face the Democratic nominee, former acting county treasurer Dan Bachman, in the Nov. 3 election.
