Health Department Confirms Measles Case

The Otsego County Department of Health has confirmed a single case of measles in an unvaccinated adult and is actively monitoring the situation, according to Assistant Public Health Director Kimberly Schlosser.

“We have one confirmed case in an unvaccinated adult. We have isolated close contacts and are actively monitoring the situation,” Schlosser said.

She noted that, at this time, “there have been no confirmed cases in children.”

County health officials are continuing to track potential measles exposures and are urging residents to be aware of symptoms and take appropriate steps if they believe they may have come into contact with measles.

“If someone thinks they have been exposed to measles, they should contact their healthcare provider or Otsego County Department of Health,” Schlosser said.

The Department of Health is also making vaccination resources available to eligible residents.

“We can provide the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine at no cost to eligible individuals,” Schlosser added.

Measles is a highly contagious virus that can spread through respiratory droplets and close contact. While the county has reported only one confirmed case, health officials emphasize the importance of vigilance, especially as close contacts continue to be monitored.

The Otsego County Department of Health will provide updates as needed and encourages residents to reach out with any questions or concerns related to potential exposure or vaccination availability.
