At New Fenimore Show

Skating Olympians Peggy Fleming and Dick Button pause at a display case containing a statue from her days as a three-time world champion. The two stars of the ice and network TV were at The Fenimore Art Museum this afternoon for their first look at “The Art of Figure Skating Through the Ages: The Dick Button Collection,” which opened Saturday for the summer season. Peggy Fleming paused at the yellow dress (it used to be chartreuse, she said) made for her by her mother for what became her Olympic year – 1968 at Grenoble. Button, who has collected hundreds of paintings and artifacts that are the basis of the exhibit, recalled seeing Gillis Grafström and his wife Cecilie Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s collection (now the basis of the World Skating Hall of Fame collection in Colorado) during a visit to Sweden with his parents.  “My father offered to buy the collection for me,” said Button, “but I was 17…”  He later began collecting hundreds of artworks and artifacts of his sport, the basis of this summer’s “Art of Figure Skating” exhibit.
