Farmer With Array Of Interests

WORCESTER – While Jakob (Jake) G. Muehl, 91, who passed away Nov. 4, 2015, of congestive heart failure, spent his career as a farmer, he pursued a wide array of interests.

He carried his a noteworthy sense of humor into music, chess and teaching. He learned to fly small planes, drove school bus, substitute taught and had a chess club at Worcester Central School.

He attended SUNY Oneonta, and taught at Bishop Gibbons High School in Schenectady. He also worked at the Worcester Inn bowling alley, delivered mail for the Postal Service, drove a bulk milk truck and was a volunteer fireman.

He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, an officer of the local chapter of the Eastern Milk Producers Co-op, sang in the Midstatesman Barbershop and Worcester Community Chorale, played clarinet with the Cooperstown Summer Town Band, Schoharie County Band and the Worcester Old Timers Band.

Mr. Muehl was born May 18, 1924 in Palesnik, Yugoslavia, the son of Jakob A. and Katherine (Schmall) Muehl.

Since age 3, Jake lived in Worcester, moving into the family farm house at age 9. He graduated from Worcester Central School and married Viola Lewis on April 19, 1947, at St. Joseph’s Church in Worcester. Together they raised their family on the Muehl family dairy farm.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Susan Rooney of Worcester, Mass., Stephanie (Larry) Price of Palatine Bridge and Nancy (Larry) Decker of Worcester; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ottillie Ferrara of Oneonta and Elizabeth Michaud of Cortland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Amy; siblings Martin, Mary Naples, Catherine Clark, Michael, Anton and Rosalie Ryan.

Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Heller & Skinner Funeral Home, 155 Main St., Worcester. Remembrance time will be at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Main Street, Worcester, with the Rev. Ronald Green as celebrant. Burial to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Food and fellowship will follow in the church Social Hall.
